Hero MotoCorp is number one two wheeler manufacturer in India as well as in the world. The company has higher market share in motorcycle segment in India but it is relatively new entrant in the scooter business. Ashok Bhasin, Head of Sales, Marketing and Customer Care, Hero MotoCorp, speaks to Automotive India News on the company’s plans to increase its market share in the Indian scooter segment too.

What is your current status in the Indian two wheeler industry?

We have around 28 percent market share in the Indian two wheeler industry and we are the number one player in the country.

Can you throw light on your role in the motorcycle and scooter segment in India?

We are the market leader in the motorcycle segment with 58 percent market share where us we have 13 percent share in the scooter sector with limited number of models. So far we had only two scooter models viz Pleasure and Maestro. Already we are selling 60,000 units of scooters per month. Now we have launched two more 110 cc models namely ‘Duet’ and ‘Maestro Edge’. Our focus is not increasing the market share but becoming number one player in the scooter segment too.

What kind of steps you have taken to become number one player in the scooter segment?

We are launching scooters that have unique advantages when compared to other vehicles in the industry. Our existing models – 100cc Pleasure is the largest seller in the segment as it has been designed and positioned for women while the 110cc Maestro is one among the top three best-selling scooters in India. The company emerged as the largest exporter of scooters in the fiscal year 2014-15. With the launch of ‘Duet’ and Maestro Edge, we are entering into the next phase of journey in scooter business.

How do you compare yourself with your established competitors in the scooter segment and what are the advantages you have in your favour ?

The service is more important after selling the vehicles. We have around 6,300 network points across India for sales and service, which is almost 50 percent more than our nearest competitor. Our first nearest competitor has only 4,400 network points while the second nearest competitor has 3,800. We will utilize these advantages to overtake other competitors in the scooter segment too.

Can you please tell business plans for ‘Duet’ and ‘Maestro Edge’ in India?

Duet has been uniquely designed to attract both male and female customers while the Maestro Edge has been positioned as a premium brand from Hero MotoCorp’s scooter portfolio. The Maestro Edge has launched in the second week of this month and doing good in the retail market. As of now it is being sold in North and North East parts of India. It will cover Pan-India market soon. The Duet, which is launched on October 28, has created many expectations among the prospective buyers in the country.

What are the unique technologies incorporated in these scooters?

Both the Maestro Edge and Duet have been built completely on new platform. The 110 cc Duet comes with metal body as to make it sturdy and durable. Hero Duet comes in two versions – VX and LX. Its other features include mobile charging port, boot light, external fuel filling and telescopic front suspension. Hero Maestro Edge has several new features including remote fuel lid and seat opening twin parking lamp and bigger 12” front wheel. The Maestro Edge made its global debut recently in Colombia as ‘Dash’ during the inauguration of Hero MotoCorp’s first overseas production facility.
