MG Group launches tarmac coach ‘COLUMBUS’ in Busworld India 2016

Indian bus body building major MG Group has unveiled its first special application coach ‘Columbus’ at Busworld India 2016, targeting aviation service.

R V. Deshpande, Karnataka state Minister for Large and Medium Scale Industries, Infrastructure Development has unveiled the vehicle in the presence of Mohan V. Kamat, Founder & Chairman – MG Group and Anil M. Kamat, Managing Director – MG Group.

‘Columbus’ is a fully Monocoque Ultra-low Flat-floor Tarmac coach launched currently for international markets with a passenger entry floor height at as low as 290 mm.

The coach offers swift passenger entry and exit with five passenger doors, three at left hand side and two at right hand.

With reliable drive line aggregates like ZF and Cummins, a fully composite and leak-proof roof panel and soothing interiors decorated with LEDs, giving premium global look.

The 12 metre-long coach can accommodate 70 passengers in term of eight seated and 62 standees.

Equipped with the latest technologies such as ECAS, ABS, and CAN bus systems, the coach is fully complied with Airport Handling Manual regulations.

Anil Kamat, Managing Director, MG Group said, “The ‘Columbus’, currently diesel powered, is envisioned to be offered with CNG as well as Electric Drive lines. In India, the air passenger traffic has been increasing at 20 percent year-on-year and hence the demand for Tarmac Coaches is also increasing. The total park volume is currently 800 coaches, being a highly niche segment.”

The current demand in the Indian market stands at 50 coaches per year, which is expected to grow as aged Tarmac Coach fleets are also due for replacement.

The coach will be initially introduced for the export markets and will use the Bus World 2016 platform to take critical feedback from Indian customers, as to launch in the domestic market too.

The company has also launched its Flagship Premium Luxury Coach ‘Mammoth’ for the Indian market. The coach is already being produced for global markets since its unveiling at the previous edition of Busworld India in Mumbai in 2015.

The product has been now introduced at Busworld India 2016 for the Domestic Market. The ‘Mammoth’ has also been fully designed and developed by MG Group.

Built on the state-of-the-art MAN chassis, and certified by MAN Germany, the ‘Mammoth’ has been built with the focus of being one of the safest and most comfortable vehicles.

Anil Kamat, Managing Director, MG Group said, “Celebrating our journey of 20 years in the Bus Building Industry, the launch of ‘Mammoth’ will enhance our position in the market. We will be launching the ‘Mammoth’ in the Domestic Market in both seater and sleeper variants.”

He further added, “Mammoth coaches will be available in four variants in the market. The price range will be between Rs. 60 lakh to Rs. 65 lakh depending on the type of variant and technical specifications.”

Backed by its strong customer portfolio including Mahindra & Mahindra, Ashok Leyland, VECV, Tata Motors & MAN, MG Group has so far manufactured over 8000 buses for around 25 markets globally. The company’s annual production capacity stands at 6,500 buses across two plants in Zaheerabad, Telangana and Belgaum, Karnataka. This year, MG Group crosses a major milestone  1-lakh buses in production since inception in its 20 th year.
